SUMMARY:Private Tour of the Newly Renovated Mannerheim Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Mannerheim Museum has undergone extensive renovations\, restoring Mannerheim’s home with respect for its history.  \n\n\n\nPlease join us for a private tour of this former home of Mannerheim. The tour will help us to understand the history of Mannerheim and Finland\, interpreting history from a new perspective. \n\n\n\nWhat – often contradictory – roles and phases did Mannerheim’s life involve\, and what can we learn from them? What does patriotism look like in the future? How can we foster civilisation and social peace in an increasingly divided world? \n\n\n\nDuring the week\, the museum is only available to visit by private tour and\, therefore\, the Museum Card is not accepted. From the centre of Helsinki you can take tram number 3 or 2. The art of the 19th century contains motifs that accentuate Spain’s exoticism and unique characteristics. Today\, tourists from all over the world are still looking for an authentic Spain rooted in these images. … \n\n\n\nThe exhibition takes us from paintings that draw on the traditions of the 19th century and the ideals and myths of Spanishness towards the new era and international movements. The curators are Helena Alonso and J. Òscar Carrascosa\, c2c Cultura\, and Salla Heino. SUMMARY:Inside the Arts | Atelier Visit: Laura Pehkonen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another exclusive dip into the Helsinki art scene. This time\, Inside the Arts visits the atelier of Finnish ceramic and visual artist Laura Pehkonen.\n\n\n\nLaura Pehkonen is a ceramicist and visual artist based in Helsinki who graduated with a Master of Arts degree from Aalto University in 2014. In recent years\, she has created large-scale public ceramic wall artworks for clients such as the Helsinki Art Museum HAM\, Vaasa Hospital\, and the Finnish State Art Commission. (Lokal Helsinki) \n\n\n\nPehkonen uses and combines various materials and techniques in her work; currently focusing on ceramic\, wood\, and painting as mediums. In this special event\, we will get the chance to experience the works in-person and hear about Pehkonen’s artistic practice\, followed by a chance to ask deepening questions and engage in dialogue with the artist herself. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaura Pehkonen\n\n\n\n…  is a Finnish Helsinki-based ceramic and visual artist working mainly with unique pieces. In recent years\, she has created several large-scale public ceramic wall reliefs. Pehkonen uses and combines various materials and techniques in her work. Currently she is working with ceramic\, wood and painting. \n\n\n\n“I am looking for contrasts\, proportions\, balance and presence in my work. Regardless of the material or technique\, I am curious to do try-outs. Ceramic\, mixed media and painting. Rather than repeating a single format\, I provoke myself with several materials and techniques.” \n\n\n\nPehkonen’s works are included in the collections of HAM\, EMMA\, the Finnish State Art Commission / Finnish National Gallery\, and several private collections. His work is influenced by tradition and history\, reflected in both his choice of materials and the themes he explores. By adapting traditional tools and incorporating personal narratives into historical imagery\, Turunen’s paintings offer a glimpse into shared human experiences. His style is marked by openness and clear\, delicate strokes\, evolving with each exhibition. \n\n\n\nTurunen earned an MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts\, Helsinki\, and also studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. His work has been exhibited in Finland and Denmark\, including at Helsinki Contemporary\, Martin Asbæk Gallery\, and the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition. His art is featured in prominent collections like the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and the Finnish State Art Commission. In 2021\, Turunen received the William Thuring designated prize from the Finnish Art Society.

In classical Latin\, “figura” mirrored the Greek word “schema\,” gathering various meanings like outward appearance\, symbols\, and dream images. \n\n\n\nThe artworks of Taniguchi and Tanner challenge conventional figuration\, resembling monochromes and turning inward rather than outward. Instead of helping viewers understand the world\, the works assert their own presence\, blocking external views. Taniguchi showcases her ongoing ‘brick wall paintings\,’ suggesting constant renewal within a consistent motif. \n\n\n\nTaniguchi’s paintings depict a unified visual grid resembling masonry patterns but also exhibit surface irregularities\, echoing the fluctuations of acrylic medium behavior. Taniguchi’s work will also be featured at the Venice Biennale’s International Pavilion\, reinforcing her thematic exploration of “Foreigners Everywhere.”

The name of the exhibition Structural Expressionism comes from an architectural style in which the building’s load-bearing structures and e.g. air conditioning pipes are left visible so that they are part of the building’s architectural look. The artist has applied this idea to his paintings. His paintings are built from dimension lines and auxiliary lines\, which he has integrated into the works. With the help of these lines\, you can understand how the optical illusions of the painting have been created. They not only form the work itself\, but are also its central subject. Together\, the lines also create a grid pattern\, which forms a “grid painting” work. In some of the works\, the artist has left visible traces created during the creation process\, such as the cuts caused by a carpet knife on the surface of the painting. The incisions create a drawing element in the works.
