By painting on the reverse side of the plexiglass without viewing the front during the process\, she embraces the unexpected\, allowing the interplay between material and chance to guide her art. This method not only reflects her fascination with design-oriented creativity but also challenges traditional perceptions of control in painting. \n\n\n\nKirsti Tuokko trained as a visual arts teacher at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki and later took additional graphic and symbolic design courses at the University of California\, Berkeley. Her career as an artist began just before she turned fifty and she is now represented by Forsblom gallery since 2024. \n\n\n\nhttps://kirstituokko.fi/ \n\n\n\nhttps://www.galerieforsblom.com/artists/kirsti-tuokko

In classical Latin\, “figura” mirrored the Greek word “schema\,” gathering various meanings like outward appearance\, symbols\, and dream images. \n\n\n\nThe artworks of Taniguchi and Tanner challenge conventional figuration\, resembling monochromes and turning inward rather than outward. Instead of helping viewers understand the world\, the works assert their own presence\, blocking external views. Taniguchi showcases her ongoing ‘brick wall paintings\,’ suggesting constant renewal within a consistent motif. \n\n\n\nTaniguchi’s paintings depict a unified visual grid resembling masonry patterns but also exhibit surface irregularities\, echoing the fluctuations of acrylic medium behavior. Taniguchi’s work will also be featured at the Venice Biennale’s International Pavilion\, reinforcing her thematic exploration of “Foreigners Everywhere.”

DESCRIPTION:Let’s go check Matti Rantanen’s Structural Expressionism painting exhibition at AMA Galleria together for another artsy afterwork with Tanja & Juliette! After a guided tour in English\, let’s debrief around a drink at Bar Haven\, at the eponymous hotel nearby. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue: \n\nAMA Gallery Rikhardinkatu 1\, 00130 Helsinki\n\n\n\nBar Haven Unioninkatu 17\, 00130 Helsinki\n\n\n\n\n\nLast Day to Sign Up: 25.04.2024\n\n\n\nFree entrance at the gallery.\n\n\n\nOpen to our members and their guests\n\n\n\nOrganisers: Tanja Vuorela (+358408266103)\, Juliette de Cuzey (+358452105753)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA few words of the gallerist about Matti Rantanen & the exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nMatti Rantanen attended Vapaa taideskoulu and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from London Metropolitan University in 2008. The name of the exhibition Structural Expressionism comes from an architectural style in which the building’s load-bearing structures and e.g. air conditioning pipes are left visible so that they are part of the building’s architectural look. The artist has applied this idea to his paintings. His paintings are built from dimension lines and auxiliary lines\, which he has integrated into the works. With the help of these lines\, you can understand how the optical illusions of the painting have been created. They not only form the work itself\, but are also its central subject. Together\, the lines also create a grid pattern\, which forms a “grid painting” work. In some of the works\, the artist has left visible traces created during the creation process\, such as the cuts caused by a carpet knife on the surface of the painting. The incisions create a drawing element in the works.

SUMMARY:Helsinki Contemporary | "Not Enough Room to Swing a Cat" | Afterwork exhibition & drink
DESCRIPTION:Let’s go together at Helsinki Contemporary for a guided tour of their current group exhibition “Not Enough Room to Swing a Cat”\, followed by a cosy debrieffing session around a drink near by\, at St George’s Winter Garden. Who’s in? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue: Helsinki Contemporary\, Bulevardi 10\, 00120 Helsinki\n\n\n\nOpen to our members and their guests\n\n\n\nOrganisers: Tanja Vuorela (+358408266103)\, Juliette de Cuzey (+358452105753) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nHelsinki Contemporary’s second exhibition of the spring season\, titled “Not Enough Room to Swing a Cat\,” features three new artists to the gallery: Anton Alvarez\, Jussi Goman\, and Santeri Lehto. Despite their shared abstract minimalism\, the trio’s approach is far from nostalgic or lukewarm. Their unique styles involve clever and distinctive gestures that reinvent beauty in unexpected ways. \n\n\n\nThe paintings and sculptures in this collective display engage in a subtle and porous dialogue\, challenging preconceived notions and expectations. The artworks collide\, creating a momentous yet elusive experience. The exhibition freezes this dynamic interaction\, showcasing paintings by Lehto with elegant silence\, Goman’s energetic compositions filled with seemingly mismatched elements\, and Alvarez’s sculptures\, which play with shapes and colors in a subtly humorous way. \n\n\n\n“Not Enough Room to Swing a Cat” boldly presents a visual narrative within a historical context. Through contrasts and clashes\, the exhibition reconciles opposites\, embracing a back-and-forth of feminine and masculine expression\, deconstruction\, and creative reconstruction of form. The artworks merge in a riot of color\, forming a dance of sweet misshapenness and misshapen sweetness. \n\n\n\nAfter an inspiring visit\, let’s head to the Winter Garden at St George Hotel for a delightful transition from art to relaxation. Nestled in a haven of sophistication\, this elegant space exudes warmth with a crackling fireplace and iconic Klaus Hapaniemi designs\, among other classical pieces that capture the essence of Finnish aesthetics.
