About the exhibition

“Garden Futures: Designing with Nature marks a significant collaboration between the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum, as they embark on the creation of a new architecture and design museum. Spanning the exhibition spaces on Kasarmikatu and Korkeavuorenkatu from November 10, 2023, this immersive exhibition unfolds seamlessly across both museum buildings, providing visitors with a comprehensive experience accessible with a single ticket.

Explore the intersection of gardens, architecture, design, and art in this groundbreaking exhibition, presented as the inaugural stop in Helsinki by the Vitra Design Museum, the Wüstenrot Foundation, and the Nieuwe Instituut. Engage with the transformative journey that challenges traditional perceptions of gardens as mere havens, prompting a reexamination through lenses of activism, social justice, and biodiversity. The exhibition sheds light on the interconnectedness of private gardens with society, revealing, for instance, the colonial roots of many Western garden plants.

Discover not only the intricacies of design and landscape architecture related to gardens but also artworks that delve into the very essence of these spaces. The inclusion of local examples and projects enriches the international perspective of this touring exhibition. Both the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum offer weekly guided tours, allowing visitors to delve deeper into the thought-provoking narrative presented by Garden Futures: Designing with Nature.”
